Early Orthodontics

Our orthodontic offerings include full treatments for adolescents who have lost all of their primary teeth and who can be compliant in caring for teeth and appliances throughout their term of use. We offer full treatments of traditional metal braces as well as clear braces which are more aesthetically pleasing due to their lower visibility profile.

Complex cases requiring jaw surgery can also be managed through our dental team with referrals to an excellent dental surgeon.

If your family has young children who are still in the baby teeth stage, you might think it is too early to start thinking about orthodontic treatment. But did you know the Canadian association of orthodontics recommends that early interceptive treatment in orthodontics begin as early as age seven?

Advantages of Early Interceptive Treatment

With early interceptive treatment, patients are more likely to spend shorter periods of time in braces when they get older. These treatments can reduce or eliminate the need to control crowding with tooth extractions and can prioritize space for unerupted teeth to emerge from the gum line unobstructed. In cases where cross-bite correction is required, orthodontic appliances can often avoid the likelihood of more invasive treatment being required at a later time.

Early interceptive treatment allows your dental professional to evaluate and monitor the healthy progression of your child’s dental growth and development. With early interceptive treatment we are further equipped to improve the dental skeletal growth and development of your child’s mouth. Early treatment in orthodontics does not necessarily require the installation of appliances. Often, orthodontists continue to monitor the growth and development of the jaw and the eruption of the adult teeth until such time as a treatment can be offered if necessary. This can include expansion appliances, partial braces or other orthodontic appliances.

What are the Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment?

The benefits of orthodontic treatment are varied beyond their aesthetic benefit. Malocclusion (poor bite), not only changes the visual presentation of your smile but also impacts the function and health of the tissues of the mouth.

Crooked teeth can result in uneven wear on the teeth exposing some teeth to significantly more bite force pressure during chewing than their more recessed counterparts. This puts teeth at risk of breakage and also impacts the patient’s ability to effectively maintain oral hygiene. Since crooked teeth leave more hiding places for plaque bacteria and tartar build-up, correcting malocclusion to represent optimal alignment distributes the pressure across the dental arches and ensures that teeth are easily and effectively cleaned with the use of a toothbrush and dental floss. Bad breath due to an overgrowth of bacteria is much more easily controlled in a mouth with proper alignment.

Alignment of teeth can also impact the function of the jaw and the temporomandibular joint. TMJ disorders can result from the combination of poorly aligned teeth with poorly distributed bite force pressure. This can result in pain in the jaw joint as well as chronic headaches and tension in the neck and shoulders.
