Why Are Teeth Extracted?

Our goal is to help make your natural teeth last a lifetime, but there are a number of different reasons a tooth may need to be removed. Tooth extraction may be necessary if other methods of restorative dentistry will not do the trick.

Reasons your dentist may recommend a tooth extraction include:

  • An overcrowded mouth, especially when preparing for orthodontics
  • Excessive tooth decay or infection
  • A tooth is damaged beyond repair
  • Gum disease causing a tooth to loosen

What to Expect from a Tooth Extraction

We understand our patients may feel nervous about a dental procedure and we want to help make you feel comfortable in our care. Our team of compassionate professionals can go over what to expect so you understand the process for maintaining a happy and healthy smile.

Preparing for a Tooth Extraction

Prior to the tooth extraction procedure, it’s important to discuss with your dentist your medical history and any medications you’re taking. At this time, we’re happy to answer any questions you have so you get a full understanding of what can be expected and ease any nervousness you may be feeling.

To begin, your dentist administers local anesthesia in combination with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to numb the treatment area. Once numb, your dentist loosens the tooth using specialized tools to remove it from the socket.

Recovering from a tooth extraction can take a couple of days. For a speedy recovery and to minimize your discomfort, you can:

  • Use painkillers as recommended or prescribed by your dentist
  • Apply ice to the treated area to reduce swelling
  • Eat soft foods
  • Continue to brush and floss your teeth, but avoid the extraction site
